He had announced it to the priests of his diocese during the summer of last year: Bishop Vitus Huonder, the current Bishop of Chur, took the decision to settle at the end of his mandate, in one of the centres of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, namely the Santa Maria Institute in Wangs (Switzerland), a school he knows very well and which he has visited many times.
Is this symbolic? Nevertheless, the Cathedral Chapter of Chur had elected Bishop Huonder on the eve of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum on July 6, 2007. His appointment was confirmed by Benedict XVI the next day. In 2015, Bishop Huonder was one of the prelates who had participated in discussions with the Society of Saint Pius X, visiting some of its seminaries. He had been able to appreciate the role that this community played in promoting the traditional liturgy and spirit. Two years later, having reached the age limit, he submitted his resignation to Pope Francis, who decided to extend his term of office for another two years.
It is obvious that Bishop Huonder is not leaving in a spirit of dissent and that the Pope has endorsed his project. This announcement only corroborates the movement for the normalization of the Society of Saint Pius X that began twenty years ago and has now been almost fully endorsed since the Pope granted sacramental jurisdiction for the sacraments administered for the Society of Saint Pius X in recent years.
Just rumors? Here’s a quote from the interview with Fr. de Jorna, superior of the District of France of the FSSPX, published on 19 January 2019:
Huonder, bishop of Coira, Switzerland, a friend of the St. Pius X Fraternity but also close to Pope Francis, is said to be retiring to a school run by the Fraternity in Switzerland, with the approval of the Pope. So, is it officially possible to take his retreat within the Fraternity, as in any other congregation?
Father de Jorna: Indeed, Bishop Huonder has manifested quite a lot of this project. But he is still at the head of his diocese. The realization is therefore for the future and only God knows it.
How can anyone say “friend of the FSSPX and close to Francis”? By suppressing in his life the principle of contradiction, as liberals are accustomed to do. An illuminating fact: in 2015, this bishop made some correct statements about sodomy, but when faced with the reaction of homosexual groups, he ended up apologizing “especially to people of homosexual sensitivity” (see here and here). Would Monsignor Lefebvre have accepted that a person of this profile join his congregation? Never. But the Neo-FSSPX, in order to achieve the desired “regularization”, is willing - judging by the response of Fr. de Jorna - to be infiltrated by “conservatives” (liberals and moderate modernists) friends of Francis the destroyer.
Interesting: “Huonder did not leave [the FSSPX] in a dissenting spirit and that the Pope had supported his project.” 1) This simply means that the FSSPX is no longer seen as a dissenting group from revolutionary and apostate Rome. Very serious. 2) That the most scandalous and most openly liberal and modernist pope in history approves of the idea, it is enough and too much to form a judgment about it.
To clear up any doubt and in case any dreamer expects Bishop Huonder to abandon liberalism to join a Fraternity on the warpath with liberal, modernist and apostate Rome - as Bishop Lazo did years ago - it should be noted that in the preface of the diocesan calendar 2019, sent to all priests and pastoral agents, Bishop Huonder reminds them that “all roads lead to Rome”. “We are Catholics when we are bound by the visible principle of unity with Peter’s successor, not only emotionally, but also and especially in faith. …I wish our diocese to remain always united in faith, liturgy and discipline as the living cell of the organism which is the Church” (source).
