Rev. Charles M. Carty

Fr. Charles Mortimer Carty (1900–1964) was an American Catholic priest, evangelist, and co-author, best known for his collaboration with Fr. Leslie Rumble in the Radio Replies series, a cornerstone of Catholic apologetics in the 20th century. Born in New York, Fr. Carty was ordained to the priesthood in 1930 and became widely recognized for his dynamic preaching and dedication to spreading the Catholic faith.

Fr. Carty’s partnership with Fr. Rumble brought Catholic apologetics to the forefront through radio programs and publications that addressed misconceptions about Catholicism. Together, they answered thousands of questions on faith, morals, and Church teachings, providing concise and orthodox responses that appealed to both Catholics and non-Catholics.

In addition to his apologetics work, Fr. Carty was known for his devotion to promoting Marian apparitions, particularly those of Our Lady of Fatima, and for his missionary zeal. He travelled extensively, giving lectures and missions to inspire faith and devotion among Catholics. His work complemented Fr. Rumble’s theological expertise with his engaging personality and evangelistic fervour.

Fr. Carty’s legacy lies in his contributions to Catholic apologetics and his tireless efforts to spread the Gospel, leaving an enduring impact on the faithful and the curious alike.
