Rev. Arnold Damen, S.J.
Rev. Arnold Damen, S.J. (1815–1890), was a zealous Jesuit missionary and preacher known for his strong defense of Catholic doctrine. Born in the Netherlands, he emigrated to the United States as a young man and entered the Society of Jesus. He became a prominent figure in the Midwest, especially in Chicago, where he founded the first Catholic parish on the city’s West Side, as well as St. Ignatius College, which later became Loyola University Chicago.
Rev. Damen’s writings and sermons, including his famous Church or Bible — Two Lectures, were aimed at clarifying Catholic teachings and refuting Protestant errors. His clear, logical style and fervent faith helped bring many converts to the Church. He is remembered as a tireless defender of the Catholic faith during a time of widespread anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States.
