Bishop John Cuthbert Hedley, O.S.B.

Bishop John Cuthbert Hedley, O.S.B. (1837–1915) was a prominent English Benedictine monk, theologian, and bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Newport (later Cardiff). Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, he joined the Benedictine Order at an early age and was ordained a priest in 1862.

Bishop Hedley was a noted scholar and writer, contributing significantly to Catholic theology and apologetics. His works often focused on defending the Catholic faith against misconceptions and promoting its teachings to a broader audience. Among his notable publications are books such as The Light of Life and Our Divine Saviour, which provided clear and accessible explanations of Catholic doctrine. He also contributed to Catholic periodicals and was a staunch advocate for the revival of Catholic intellectual life in England.

Appointed bishop in 1881, Hedley served his diocese with great dedication, focusing on pastoral care, the expansion of Catholic education, and the construction of churches to accommodate the growing Catholic population in Wales. His leadership was marked by a blend of intellectual rigour and deep spirituality.
