Rev. Henry O'Connor, S.J.
Rev. Henry O’Connor, S.J. (1835–1910) was an Irish-born American Jesuit priest, theologian, and author, renowned for his contributions to Catholic apologetics and historical theology. After joining the Society of Jesus, Fr. O’Connor emigrated to the United States, where he became an influential figure in Catholic intellectual and pastoral circles.
He is best remembered for his book Luther’s Own Statements Concerning His Teaching and Its Results, a critical analysis of Martin Luther’s writings and their impact on Christian theology and society. Drawing from Luther’s own words, Fr. O’Connor presented a Catholic critique of the Reformation, defending the Church’s teachings and authority against Protestant innovations.
In addition to his apologetic works, Fr. O’Connor was dedicated to pastoral ministry and Catholic education, reflecting the Jesuit tradition of blending rigorous scholarship with a deep commitment to the faith. His writings remain a significant contribution to Catholic responses to the theological and cultural challenges of his time.
