St. Sylvester — Pope and Confessor December 31

St. Sylvester was one of the great Popes who guided the Church during her troublesome times of persecution. He faced the danger of death to encourage Christians to be faithful when brought to trial for their Faith.

Behold a great priest who in his days pleased God. There was not found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High. — Gradual

The Imitation of Christ
Ought not all painful labors to be endured for everlasting life?
This is the last day of the year. If you have been lovingly attentive to the voice of the Church in her liturgy, you have learned to know at least 365 of the friends of Christ. Of these friends of Christ, St. John in the Apocalypse says that he saw a multitude which no man could number of all nations, and tribes, and peoples, and tongues.
Set aside at least a half hour today for taking spiritual inventory. Are you making the necessary effort to be one of the multitude St. John speaks of? Your conduct minute for minute decides Eternity for you.
Only one thing is necessary.
